Area Residents Urged to Take Survey on Impact of Code Compliance

Community Town Hall to Discuss Resident Concerns with County Officials Set for February 6

Jan. 6, 2014 - Annandale, VA – Mason District Council of Community Associations (MDC) is urging Fairfax County residents to take a ”code compliance feedback” survey. The survey, available at www.masondistrict.org and open until January 28, 2014, seeks feedback on code compliance violations, impact upon quality of life and suggestions for improving the current code enforcement system.

The Department of Code Compliance (DCC) is responsible for receiving complaints and enforcing zoning violations in Fairfax County. The Department investigates quality of life complaints in the County, including parking in the grass, junk in the yard, too many people living in a home, uncut grass, building without permits, and hoarding. It enforces zoning, property maintenance, building, blight, grass, fire and health codes all within in a single department.

Pedestrian & School Children Safety on Magarity Road - Status Update

Two positive updates –

1. We will get a walk signal on all four sides at the intersection of Magarity and Anderson Road. Please refer to the email below.
2. Regarding the entrance of K&R and its overlap with the pedestrian crossing – Since the school construction is expected to begin in a month, the K&R will be relocated to newly constructed upper parking lot on the other side of the school. Once the construction is complete the K&R will be moved back to the left rear of the building and a crosswalk will be put in.

We are working with VDOT on the main issue of a school crossing signal. Our supervisor John Foust is helping us. Please call his office Ph: 703-356-0551 or send email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. on this issue. Your feedback is very important.
Still gathering status updates on other items.

Re: Pedestrian & School Children Safety on Magarity Road - Status Update

Below is the latest email from VDOT representative.
The good news is that Warrant study qualifies for a signal; however, VDOT feels that are adequate controls in place to not have a signal (bad news). Originally VDOT was saying that none of the Warrants were being satisfied, since we pushed for a second study (and VDOT study data) we were able to see a VDOT Warrant being satisfied. Talking to people, we are going to push for a signal. If you have comments. Please let us know This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call Supervisor Foust's office -- Ph: 703-356-0551

There have been some developments on other action items for which I would like to confirm with the necessary stakeholders for accuracy before sharing them with you. The Magarity Sidewalk (along with others) was supported at two of the FCDOT meetings and also on the survey. I will send a status email within a week.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
Animesh (Volunteer)

Pedestrian & School Children Safety on Magarity Road - Status Update 11/11/2013

VDOT believes that the warrant study (rules suggested by the Federal government http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/htm/2009/part4/part4c.htm) does not satisfy the need for a signal. There was a disagreement between us and VDOT. We have asked for VDOT decision data and a direct meeting with VDOT for data analysis. As an example, the VDOT engineer has specified that since the Peabody/Magarity intersection is at the hill a person can see on both sides of the road and make an educated crossing judgment.. There was a disagreement as this is not true.

Supervisor Foust was supportive of our safety concerns and has asked the county and VDOT personnel to look into alternative ways to improve the safety on Magarity.

We are hopeful of results from the county and VDOT (Hoping that county and VDOT officials Walk the Talk).

1. Crossing at Magarity Road and Peabody Road

1.1. We will be meeting with VDOT to analyze their data and justifications.

1.2. Supervisor Foust is very supportive of our cause and has asked county staff to look at alternate ways to resolve the problem (an idea suggested was a median)

2. Crossing at Magarity Road and Griffith Road

Pedestrian & School Children Safety on Magarity Road Quick Update

We have a meeting with the head of VDOT Arlington and Fairfax counties on 11/12/2013 to discuss the Westgate signal issue. We ran into issues communicating with the VDOT field engineer who felt that due to low traffic volume there is no need for a signal. A volunteer reached out to the VA Governor’s office and the Virginia Secretary of Transportation to make this meeting possible. We are not getting our positive hopes high yet, but remain optimistic and will know on 11/12/2013.

The crossing guard has signed the petition and she feels we need the signal.

Petitioner 100 was the property manager of Commons of McLean who is representing 577 units. So do we have 677 signatures? YAY. For the conversation we can keep it 100.

A volunteer helped create the mailing list to all houses on magarity for sidewalk. We stand at (3 YAYs). Still waiting on other signatures.

Supervisor Foust office has been a great facilitator; however we have requested Supervisor Foust to take a position on this petition and have no response from him as of yet. We should get a response on 11/12/2013.

Pimmit Hills Citizen Association has endorsed our petition and we have raised the issue with McLean Citizen’s Association (MCA). MCA Transportation representative is planning on attending the meeting scheduled on 11/12/2013.

Fairfax County Launches Countywide Dialogue on Transportation Projects

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is holding a series of meetings this fall to gather community feedback on groups of currently unfunded transportation projects. The May 2013 passage of House Bill (HB) 2313 has provided new funding for both regional and local transportation projects (roadway, transit, bike and pedestrian). FCDOT is engaging residents to help prioritize county needs that could be addressed with the new state funding. This effort will consist of a series of community meetings in October and November 2013 at which a series of transportation projects will be discussed.

The public will have the opportunity to provide feedback in various ways. Residents can provide input in person at the meetings or online via survey, social voting, or email through November 22, 2013. The public meetings will include a presentation, a question-and-answer session, and an opportunity to view materials and talk to county staff. The meeting dates are:
